BELÉM WALKING TOUR | Merge into the 15th and 16th centuries, and learn about the Portuguese Discoveries
On this tour, you'll walk through the westernmost part of Lisbon as you visit the Belém Neighbourhood, an area that is deeply connected with the golden years of the Portuguese History: the Age of the Discoveries, and the beginning of the so-called Globalization. It is hard to imagine that 500 years ago the brave Portuguese Navigators, and Sailors left their homes and families to explore an unknown world, making Portugal the early 16th the wealthiest Nation on earth, and Lisbon the world capital for the trade of spices.
We'll start our Tour in the statue of Afonso de Albuquerque in front of the Presidential Palace. From there we'll walk through the picturesque Belém Street, where we find numerous houses with glazed tiles and iron balconies in its facades, as well as the worldwide famous pastry named Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém, which offers you the possibility to taste its delicious custard tarts "Pastéis de Belém". Afterwards, we'll cross the road and visit the cloister and the church of the impressive Monastery of St. Jerome, a masterpiece of the Manueline architecture and sculpture from the 16th Century, that is today a national pantheon, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Next, we will stop at the Monument to the Discoveries, a monument that pays a tribute to the 33 main characters that changed the fate of Portugal during the golden years of the discoveries, such as: Kings, Queens, Princes, Cartographers, Mathematicians, Missioners, Navigators, Painters and Writers. To finish the tour, we'll walk a couple of minutes before we reach Lisbon's most popular monument: the Belém Tower. Once a defensive fortress, it is nowadays am iconic jewel of the Manueline architecture, combining maritime elements with the European late gothic style.
